FACIAL MICRO EXPRESIONS
"we read each other through our eyes, and anatomically they are an extension of our brains.
when we catch someone's eye, we look into a mind.-Siri Hustvedt"
Micro expressions are very brief involaluntary facial expressions, lasting only a fraction of a second.
They usually occur in situations where people have something to lose or gain.
Micro expressions occur when a person consciously or deliberately trying to conceal all signs of a feeling.
Unlike regular facial expressions that we can control, micro expressions are difficult/impossible to hide.
There are seven emotions that have universal signals.
-Anger
-Fear
-Sadness
-Disgust
-Contempt
-Surprise
-Hapiness
We will go through each of these emotions one at the time, explained through pictures and text.
-The brows are raised
-Horizontal wrinkles across the forehead
-Eyelids are opened, white of the eye showing above and below
-Mouth is open and teeth are parted but there is no tension or stretching of the mouth
-Inner corners of the eyebrows are drawn in and then up
-Upper eyelids are drooping
-losing focus in eyes
-slight pulling down of the lips
-Lower lip pouts out
This micro expression is the hardest one to fake
-eyebrows are raised and pulled together, usually in a flat line
-raised upper eyelids
-the forehead is wrinkled in between the center of the eyebrows, not across and above the brows.
-Upper eyelid is raised, but the lower lid is tensed and pulled up
-only the upper eye white is shown, not the bottom
-Mouth is open and lips are slightly stretched horizontally back to ears
-Upper lid is raised
-Nose wrinkeling
-Raised cheeks
-lines below the bottom eyelid show
For example this is the expression you make when smelling something bad or see something dirty
-One corner of the mouth tightened and raised on only one side of the face
This micro expression is easy to spot because it is asymmetrical.
-Eye brows are lowered and together
-Vertical lines appear between the brows
-Lower lid is tensed
-Eyes hard stare or glare.
-narrowing the lips en corners are pulled down
-Nostrils may be dilated
-Mouth is closed and jaw can be tensioned
(All three facial zones must be engaged, otherwise you may have ambiguity)
-Corners of the lips are stretched back and up
-Mouth may or may not be parted, and sometimes teeth are exposed
-A wrinkle runs from outer nose to outer lip
-pushed up cheeks
-Lower lid may show wrinkles or be tense
-Crow’s feet wrinkles near the the eyes
-movement from the muscle that orbits the eye
We all enjoy seeing this micro expression, but an indicator of a fake smile is the lack of crow’s feet around the eyes
